Bernice Hemphill was a bioanalyst working at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Following the Japanese attack on the U.S. Navy base, she volunteered her services at Honolulu's Queen Hospital. In 1944 she became director of the Irwin Memorial Blood Bank. She would become a leading administrator and internationally recognized authority in the field of bloodbanking.
